In a devastating incident that has left the Mesa community heartbroken, a 5-year-old girl lost her life after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street with her family on December 26. The tragic accident occurred near the intersection of Hawes and Guadalupe roads at approximately 9:30 p.m.

According to the Mesa Police Department, Ariyah Marie Elias was crossing the street with her mother and five other children when the accident happened. Sgt. Richard Encinas reported that the group was in a crosswalk on East Guadalupe Road at South Hawes Road when the light changed. Northbound and southbound traffic had the green light as the family entered the intersection, but it shifted to allow eastbound and westbound traffic to proceed while they were still crossing.

A vehicle traveling westbound on Guadalupe Road struck Ariyah. The driver reportedly did not see the group until it was too late to stop. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and attempted lifesaving measures before transporting Ariyah to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her mother and the five other children, aged between 8 and 14, were not injured in the collision.

Police have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was traveling on a green light at the time of the accident. The incident remains under investigation, with authorities reviewing all aspects of the collision to determine if further action is necessary. As of now, no charges have been filed against the driver.

“We understand this is a heartbreaking incident for the community, and our thoughts are with the family and everyone impacted,” Sgt. Encinas said in a statement.

The Mesa community has come together to support Ariyah’s grieving family. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover funeral expenses and has already reached the halfway mark of its $20,000 goal. The fundraiser describes Ariyah as a beloved child whose death has deeply affected all who knew her.

The family has announced that Ariyah’s funeral service will take place on January 8, offering the community an opportunity to come together to honor her memory.

This tragic accident underscores the importance of pedestrian safety, particularly at busy intersections. Authorities urge both drivers and pedestrians to exercise extra caution, especially in areas with heavy traffic and changing light patterns.

The Mesa Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, emphasizing that ensuring pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility.

As the investigation proceeds, the Mesa community mourns the loss of a young life cut tragically short. Aaliyah’s death serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of vigilance on the roads. Thoughts and prayers pour in for her family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
