Memorial Day 2025 Celebrations Across the Tri-State Area
On May 26, 2025, Memorial Day was celebrated with heartfelt parades and solemn ceremonies in New York City and its surrounding areas, coinciding with the final day of Fleet Week. Following an impressive two days of air displays during the FourLeaf Air Show at Jones Beach, thousands gathered along the coast to witness breathtaking performances by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.
Ceremonies at the Intrepid Museum
One of the highlights of the day’s observances took place at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in Manhattan. Attendees were treated to the annual memorial ceremony, which began with a ceremonial unfurling of the American flag at Pier 86. This was followed by the laying of four wreaths in the Hudson River, a poignant rendition of “Echo Taps,” a three-volley rifle salute, and an impressive Navy jet flyover.
Among the attendees was 93-year-old Michael Horvath, a veteran who served aboard the USS Intrepid over seven decades ago. “I was on it in 1952 when we recommissioned her to travel from California to Virginia,” he shared. New York City Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, “Our flag is still here because of the men and women of our military service.” Visitors participated in military demonstrations, including those by the Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, while public tours of Navy ships were also available.
Bay Ridge Memorial Day Parade
Meanwhile, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, the 158th Memorial Day Parade commenced with a strong turnout. Veterans, their families, and community members gathered early to reflect on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women. The parade kicked off at 11 a.m., starting at the intersection of Third Avenue and 78th Street, advancing towards Marine Avenue and Fourth Avenue. This year’s grand marshal, Major General Kris Belanger of the 99th Readiness Division, honored her 35-year commitment to the U.S. military, reminding attendees that “It is a truly somber day, but it also is a day for us to reflect and be thankful for our freedom.”
Vietnam War veterans Lenny Deutsch and Steve Miller highlighted the day’s true meaning. “It’s not a shopping day. It’s a remembrance day,” Miller asserted, while Deutsch added, “It’s a dedication to the people who lost their lives for our country. So it’s meaningful.” A 21-gun salute was part of the ceremonial proceedings at John Paul Jones Park, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
